Complicity.
First they came for the communists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
~ Martin Niemöller
If you think for one moment the money companies like Chick-fil-A send to the Family Research Council and others isn’t used to promote hate and bigotry, you’ve got another think coming.
Chick-fil-A’s charitable arm, WinShape, has a history of donating to conservative Christian organizations like Exodus International and the Family Research Council. Suffredini says that such groups “promote hate and harm” of LGBT people, a claim that is supported by their records. The Southern Poverty Law Center lists the FRC as an anti-gay “extremist” organization with an active lobby in Washington, while Exodus International calls homosexuality, like “adultery, arrogance, [and] gossip,” a “sin.”
I reiterate: The Family Research Council is classified as a hate organization by the people who’ve studied exactly that for decades.
Meanwhile, Exodus International is the group that actively promotes the “pray the gay away” tactic, which purports to turn homosexuals into heterosexuals. Problem is, the entire movement is based on a flawed study which has since been denounced by its author.
Further, the group spent time and money in support of Uganda’s extreme anti-gay laws, laws which called for the death of homosexuals within that country.
That’s right. That chicken sandwich and waffle fries may well result in hate propaganda directed at U.S. citizens, a gay teen being kidnapped by his own parents and sent to an anti-gay camp, or the death of a lesbian in Kampala.
Congratulations. You are now complicit. So, let’s update Mr. Niemöller’s poem, shall we?
First they came for the gays,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t gay.
Then they came for the pagans,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t pagan.
Then they came for the atheists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t an atheist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
SPEAK UP.
